What is marketing efficiency ratio?
Marketing efficiency ratio (MER) is total revenue divided by total marketing spend for the same period. It is a blended measure across your business rather than an attributed campaign result. This calculator also estimates gross profit, contribution after marketing and marketing spend as a share of revenue.
How to use this calculator
- Enter total revenue and total marketing spend for a matching period.
- Include a consistent set of marketing costs each time you compare MER.
- Enter gross margin to see whether blended revenue efficiency leaves positive contribution.
How to interpret your result
MER can improve because of repeat customers, organic demand or timing differences even when a new campaign underperforms. Use it with channel and customer measures. Contribution here excludes overhead and other costs that are absent from gross margin and marketing spend.
Frequently asked questions
How is MER different from ROAS?
MER uses total revenue and total marketing spend. ROAS uses revenue attributed to ads and ad spend. These measures answer different questions and should not be compared without checking their scope.
Is higher MER always better?
A higher ratio may indicate greater revenue efficiency, but cutting productive acquisition spend can also raise the short-term ratio while reducing future growth. Review contribution, growth and customer acquisition together.
